
The 11th Girls in Aviation Day has been observed at Kotoka International Airport (KIA). The day is celebrated globally by the various chapters of Women in Aviation International (WAI) to inspire, educate and empower girls between the ages of 8 and 18 to pursue careers in the aviation industry. In Ghana, the event was organized by WAI, Ghana Chapter comprising women professionals working in the Aviation Industry.
Selected students from Tema Senior High School, Methodist Day Senior High School, Peki Senior High School, Accra High School, Corpus Christi Senior High School and African Science Academy were sponsored for this year’s event.
In her welcome remarks, the President of Women in Aviation, Ghana Chapter, Mrs. Juliet Okae, emphasized that the theme for the celebration “Inspiring the next generation of women in aviation seeks to give students insights into the aviation industry. She indicated that the Ghana Chapter had been dedicated to promoting and advancing women and girls in the aviation since 2015. She further indicated that the Girls in Aviation Day is observed annually in over 19 countries, with over 150 events planned across the globe.
She announced that next year, the celebration will be observed in the Norther Region of Ghana to give the girls an opportunity to learn more about the aviation industry.
The Special Guest of Honour at the event, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Limited, in her address, commended the Executives of Women in Aviation International, Ghana Chapter for their continued efforts in inspiring and empowering young women to pursue careers in the aviation industry. She told the young ladies that aviation was not just about flying planes but was about team work, innovation, service and connection; connecting people, cultures and economies. She noted that the industry thrived on passion, discipline and a desire to make a difference in people’s lives through the power of travel and technology.
She encouraged the young women to pursue careers in aviation such as Pilots, Engineers, Air Traffic Controllers, airport Managers among others. ‘’I look forward to the day when many of you will return as professional – leading teams, managing operations, and inspiring the next generation of women in aviation’’. Mrs Opare said.
Other speakers at the event included, Mrs Elsie Adikie Okutu-Bediako, Station Manager, United Airlines, Mrs. Eloina Baddoo, General Manager, Delta Air Lines Sales Office, Madam Valerie Suberg, Senior Manager, Aircraft Maintenance, Orbis International – The Flying Eye Hospital among others.
This year’s event was sponsored by Ghana Airports Company Limited, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines.
Women in Aviation International is a non-profit organization dedicated to the encouragement and advancement of women in all aviation and aerospace career fields and interests. They offer educational outreach programs to young girls nationally and internationally through programmes such as the Annual Girls in Aviation Day.
