Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), in collaboration with Women in Aviation Ghana and the GACL Ladies Club, organised a breakfast meeting to commemorate International Women’s Day, which is celebrated globally each year. The theme for this year’s celebration was “Give to Gain.”
The keynote speaker for the event was the Honourable Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture and Member of Parliament for Shama in the Western Region, Emelia Arthur. She commended initiatives such as Women in Aviation Ghana, which deliberately mentors young girls and prepares them for careers once considered impossible for women.
Hon. Arthur noted that such initiatives embody the spirit of this year’s theme — investing today so that tomorrow’s leaders can rise with confidence and without apology.
She encouraged participants to commit to three purposeful actions: Give opportunities, give knowledge, and give support. According to her, by doing so, society will gain stronger institutions, stronger industries, and ultimately a stronger nation.
She also highlighted that about 80% of the value chain in the fisheries sector is driven by women, who process fish, market it, and generate income for their families and communities.
She further advised that leadership should not be about accumulation but circulation, encouraging leaders to give their time through mentorship, training, and uplifting others.
The Managing Director of GACL, Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, urged women to recommit themselves to creating opportunities, addressing inequalities, and fostering inclusive environments within their spheres of influence.
“Together, let’s drive change, champion women’s empowerment, and create a brighter future for all. When we invest in women, we unlock a ripple effect of progress and prosperity,” Mrs. Opare stated.
Panelists who graced the occasion included Madam Ama Bawuah, Board Chairperson of Access Bank Ghana, who shared insights on financial management for women; Commander (Dr) Diana Afeng-Nkansah, Family Physician Consultant and Diabetes Specialist at 37 Military Hospital, who spoke about diabetes and diet management; and Wing Commander Heindel Senaya, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the same hospital, who discussed women’s reproductive health, including the management of perimenopause and the stages thereafter.
Other dignitaries present at the event included the Director-General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, Rev. Wilfred Stephen Arthur; Assistant Commissioner of the Ghana Revenue Authority Customs Division at the Kotoka International Airport, Madam Grace Assumin; the Head of the National Intelligence Bureau at the airport, Madam Josephine Gandaapiri; representatives of ground handling companies; female staff of GACL; male staff patrons; and a host of other stakeholders.
