Ghana Airports Company Women in Aviation Visit Orbis Flying Eye Hospital

Accra, October 30, 2025 — The Women in Aviation chapter of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), led by Managing Director Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, paid a visit to the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital at Kotoka International Airport, to learn more about the organization’s life-changing mission and impact in Ghana.

The Orbis Flying Eye Hospital, the world’s only accredited teaching hospital on board an MD-10 aircraft, arrived in Ghana three weeks ago on a mission to train local eye care professionals and perform sight-restoring surgeries. This year’s mission was conducted in partnership with the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, and the Ghana Ophthalmic Nursing Schools, with the goal of strengthening local capacity in ophthalmic care and expanding access to sight-saving treatment across the country.

The GACL team was warmly welcomed on board by Madam Valerie Suberg, Senior Manager, Aircraft Maintenance at Orbis, who briefed the delegation on the hospital’s operations and highlighted that this marks Orbis’ fourth visit to Ghana.

Mrs. Opare commended the Orbis team for their dedication to combating preventable blindness and delivering essential eye care services to communities nationwide. She also encouraged the team to consider Tamale International Airport as their next destination, noting that its runway is equally capable of accommodating large aircraft. This, she said, would allow residents in the northern regions of Ghana to benefit directly from Orbis’ specialized eye care interventions.

She concluded by wishing the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital team continued success and a safe onward journey.
